I knew in advance what to expect from this movie, so that probably played a role in my understanding of it. There is no straightforward storyline in the film. The entire plot can be crammed into almost two paragraphs. It's about four college girlfriends (one a devoutly quiet Selena Gomez and three wild things) who desperately want to take an awesome vacation on the ocean. Alas and ah, their savings aren't enough for that. So the three hooligans rob the local diner and all go on vacation together. The first half of the movie is 90 percent filming of local beach and other parties with lots of alcohol, drugs and lots of naked girls. They like it, everything goes according to plan, they would like to stay there forever, "freeze" the moment. But they get into a scrape from which they are pulled out by the local gangster, a wacky temptress played by James Franco, after which this fine and wild atmosphere slowly begins to fall apart. At what point will they realize that's it, it seems vacation time is over, it seems it's time to go home?
I understand those people who say, "No way, the movie is about nothing, there's nothing but (excuse me) young tits. Those people would be right to a certain extent. This movie is like a kind of hymn to selfishness, an ode to unrestrained youth. At what point to turn back, it's up to you to decide. After all, if you let things slide, it can go too far. Many people compare this film to Palo Alto (which, by the way, features James Franco again. coincidence?) and, surprisingly, to Naughty Molly's music video for the track "typical pool party." There's something to that. However, there's a very clear line drawn here when the moment comes to say, "I don't like all this, I want to go home."
P.S. Nowhere else will you see James Franco on the oceanfront playing a white piano and singing a Britney Spears song while three girls in pink balaclavas and guns drawn are dancing around him.
