The Arab state of Iraq lies in the valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers within the Mesopotamian Lowlands. In the north of the country stretches the ridges of the Armenian Plateau, which in the northeast gently turns into the Iranian Plateau, where the highest point of the country - Mount Haji-Ibrahim (3587 m) is located. These areas are seismically active, so they are sparsely populated. In the south-west, there are deserts - the Syrian and Al-Hijrah deserts, which occupy a part of the Syrian Arabian Plateau, which is up to 900 m high.
The country borders with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Iran and Turkey, and in the southeast it is washed by the waters of the Persian Gulf.
Iraq has hot summers with an average temperature of +50 degrees and cold winters with frosts in the northern regions. There is a continental climate throughout the country. Precipitation mainly falls here in November and February, and in the northeast it can be up to 1500 mm per year, and in the south - only 50 mm. Despite the uneven distribution of precipitation, the air in Iraq is very humid everywhere.
Most of the country's soils are not suitable for farming, and naturally irrigated areas are along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Forests occupy only 2% of Iraq's land, with bright pink-branched tamarisk, willows, and Euphrates poplars. And the mountainous area is characterized by pistachio, juniper, and prickly shrubs.
The venomous cobra is widespread throughout Iraq. Of the larger animals, gazelles, jackals, and striped hyenas can be found. The country's rivers and lakes are rich in many kinds of fish. Unique birds are found here - Iraqi reed warbler and Iraqi thrush timelia, as well as rare species of birds - Dalmatian pelican, pink flamingo, and others. To preserve rare flora and fauna, it was decided to include more than 3.5 million hectares of land in the protected areas.
