Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia, which with each passing day is attracting more and more not only travelers but also the Australians themselves. It is called the "New World City" and is often compared to New York because of its abundance of skyscrapers. It lacks ancient architecture, special history and rare sights. When you walk around, you get the impression that the place is too clean and orderly, made as if artificially. But it's that order and sense of everything being in its proper place that draws people to Brisbane. It's full of bridges, national parks, rare animals, and yet Brisbane is home to fewer of Australia's dangerous insects and mammals than any other city. Modern, bustling and incredibly welcoming, Brisbane is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Sitting on the banks of the river and its Pacific estuary, Brisbane is very much a city of distinction. The center of Brisbane is abbreviated CBD, an acronym found everywhere. The central area is home to major attractions, amusement parks and shopping destinations. The South Bank is the center of cultural life, and the West Bank the bohemian district. The cheapest accommodation can be found in Fortitude Valley. This is also where the clubs, restaurants and bars are located.
The city is located in eastern Australia, on the banks of the Brisbane River and Morton Bay, located in the Pacific Ocean. It has been the capital of the state of Queensland since 1859. The place is surrounded by two major natural landmarks at once: the Great Coral Reef and the Great Dividing Range. The date of the city's founding is believed to be 1824. From the beginning of ancient times, aborigines lived here, and later this place became a settlement for English convicts. Later the prison was closed, and the families of the former convicts lived in the town.
Throughout its history, the area has seen many bloody battles and was on the verge of extinction three times. The first serious clashes took place here between the Aborigines and Europeans, with both sides ruthlessly destroying each other's settlements. In 1864, Brisbane was engulfed in the largest fire ever, destroying half of the city. It was this event that influenced the further shape of the architecture - the locals decided to build houses of brick and stone.
In 1893 a great tropical downpour hit the city and washed Brisbane away. It took a long time to rebuild, but the locals never gave up and were determined to keep the city.
Today the state of Queensland is considered one of the most comfortable and prosperous regions of Australia, with a rapidly growing GDP and economic stability, and its capital Brisbane is the best city to live in Australia.
